When a Woman Transforms Her Life, She Transforms Generations: The Story of Mirian Valencia

Mirian Valencia is a migrant woman from the Salvadoran diaspora. Like many people who arrive in the United States seeking an opportunity, Mirian came with the desire to work, contribute, and build a dignified life in the country she now calls home.

Her story represents that of thousands of migrant women who, with effort and determination, face the challenges of adapting to a new reality. Mirian arrived with dreams, responsibilities, and a deep commitment to contributing positively to her community, even when the path was filled with obstacles.

One of the main challenges has been language. Not mastering English affects not only access to better job opportunities, but also personal and emotional well-being. Difficulty communicating in everyday situations—such as medical appointments, job interviews, school meetings, or emergencies—can become a barrier that generates fear, frustration, and isolation.

Over time, Mirian understood that learning the language was not merely an academic goal, but a key tool for her overall development. English became a means to strengthen her autonomy, fully integrate into the community, and face difficult moments with greater confidence.

From this vision emerges the Nuestra Historia Scholarship, an educational initiative promoted by Fundación Lumina Empoderamiento Social TX in partnership with CHL – English Academy of the Americas, an academy committed to accessible, practical, and human-centered learning for the Hispanic community.

Referring to stories like Mirian’s, the founder of Fundación Lumina shares a reflection that captures the spirit of this initiative:

“When a life changes, it does not change just one story; it impacts an entire family and even a new generation.”

This conviction guides the joint work of Fundación Lumina and CHL, recognizing that behind every student there is a story, a context, and a life project. Education—especially language learning—becomes a tool of empowerment that goes beyond academics to generate real social transformation.

Today, Mirian Valencia is a woman who seeks to make a positive impact in her new country. Her journey represents not only personal growth, but also the opportunity to open doors for her family and serve as an example to other migrant women striving to move forward.

From Fundación Lumina Empoderamiento Social TX and CHL – English Academy of the Americas, the Nuestra Historia Scholarship continues to build opportunities for Hispanic women and families, with the certainty that investing in education plants impact in the present and hope for future generations.
